Recent advances in technology have enabled astronomers to discover new planets in orbit around stars beyond our Sun: so-called extrasolar planets , or 'exoplanets': for short.

Many of the new planets found to date are giant planets like Jupiter and Saturn in our own Solar System. But astronomers are now beginning to find much smaller planets, and the discovery of other 'earth-like'. planets must surely happen soon.

Could some of these distant planets exist in similar conditions to Earth - and even carry forms of life?

What would this alien life be like? Images of 'little green men' abound in the imagination, but the greatest surprise might be to find that life on other worlds may in many ways not be so different from our own.
